| Maine received its Statehood in March of 1820 and is the 23rd state. Maine is nicknamed the "Pine Tree" state with a motto that says I Direct (Dirigo). Maine's larger cities include: Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, Auburn and South Portland. Maine is the 39th largest state with over 30,000 square miles. The Chickadee in Maine's state bird and the eastern White Pine is claimed as its tree. The State Song of Maine is the song and Maine lists the White Pine cone and tassel as its flower. |
