| New Jersey is nicknamed the Garden State and received its Statehood in December 1787 as the 3rd State to join the Union. New Jersey's motto is "Liberty and Prosperity" and it was named for the Channel Island of Jersey in honor of Sir George Carteret who was one of the two men the land was originally given to. New Jersey's largest cities include: Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth and Trenton. New Jersey is the 46th largest Stae with approximately 7,400 square miles. The State flower of New Jersey is the Violet and the State bird is the Eastern Goldfinch. New Jersey claims the red Oak as its State tree. Sadly, New Jersey currently has no State song. |
